Numbers-Matching, M21 4-Speed, Mulsanne Blue Why This Car Is Special The 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is one of the most important years in C3 history, and not for reasons that are always obvious at first glance. By 1971, General Motors had mandated that all its engines be capable of running on regular low-lead fuel, and compression ratios were dropping across the board. The base 350 fell to 270 horsepower. The big-block 454 saw similar cuts. But the LT-1 â?" the solid-lifter, high-revving 350 developed largely by Zora Arkus-Duntov â?" held the line. |

What the photos show
- Metallic blue '71 Corvette convertible: paint deep and glossy, chrome bumpers bright, Rally wheels with Firestone Wide Ovals; both tops are shown — the colour-matched hardtop fitted in one frame and the white soft top raised in others, the soft top looking slightly greyed in close-up.
- Blue vinyl interior is photographed in depth and looks clean and honest — seats with light creasing, tidy door cards, wood-rim wheel and a 4-speed.
- The hood carries LT-1 decals, but the engine bay is never photographed in the 16 viewed — an LT-1 is an engine, and the engine is exactly what this gallery doesn't show; stampings and the tank sticker decide it, not the stripes.
- Underside and frame — the C3's birdcage question — are never photographed.
Money: at $72,997 the car photographs as a sharp driver with both tops; the LT-1 premium is unproven by these photos, so pay base-350 convertible money until the pad stamp and paperwork say otherwise.
